Beach maternity photography sessions have it all. They offer the perfect backdrop for more posed photos, whilst providing the space for older children to play and interact. So long as the weather is calm and there is just a subtle hint of a breeze, beach maternity photos can be taken year-round.
Unsurprisingly they’re most popular in late spring to early Autumn, but we can’t always pick when our little ones are due to arrive! In the warmer months, there is the opportunity for the mum-to-be and even her family to get into the water. This may be for posed shots, or for a splash and play. Beach family maternity photos are just as much an opportunity to celebrate your family as it is now, as well as capture the excitement of what is to come.
what week should maternity photos be taken?
There’s a sweet spot between 32 weeks and 36 weeks where your belly is lovely and round, and you still have a little energy for photos. Of course, there are no hard and fast rules, so you can book maternity photos at whatever stage you like. This certainly may be the case if you’re having multiples, are experiencing a complicated pregnancy or would like to make the most of seasonal weather before it gets too hot or cold.
what should I wear when having maternity photos taken?
There’s nothing like a long flowy dress to accentuate your bump. Select from light flowy fabrics or even sheers. A dress you’re already wearing during your pregnancy is a great option, otherwise, if you’d like something really special, you can hire a gown for the shoot.
Consider if you’d like some photos sitting down or if you’d like to have photos in the water. A dress that allows you to move and be comfortable is just as important as the overall look. Many photographers steer their clients towards nudes and whites for their beach maternity photoshoot sessions, but personally, I’m all for bold earthy colours and even patterns that the rest of the family wear colours to complement.
A dress certainly isn’t mandatory, so if you’re more of a pants, skirt or shorts person go for it!
can i include my partner and older children in my beach maternity photography session?
Absolutely! Welcoming a new baby is just as much about the family you are today as it is about the family you will be once your new baby arrives. A maternity shoot is a celebration of the love you share now and the excitement that is to come.
Beach photography is a great choice when older children are involved, as they can keep entertained by playing whilst we get some gorgeous maternity pictures of you on your own and with your partner.
what length session should i book?
If you’re just after a few photos, a 30-minute session works well. If you have several children or would like a great range of images and combinations of poses and family members, then a 60-minute session offers more flexibility for this and more included images.
